Short answer: There are three ways to integrate Salesforce with your fulfilment partner or 3PL—using a custom integration through a Salesforce partner or an AppExchange app, using a middleware/iPaaS solution, or through an integration platform. Which option is best depends on your order volume, the number of warehouses or partners, and how many other systems you want to connect.
Do you sell through Salesforce Commerce Cloud or process your orders through Salesforce Order Management? If so, you’ll want orders to be automatically sent to your fulfilment partner (3PL), and for shipping status, tracking, and inventory information to be automatically updated in Salesforce—without anyone having to manually re-enter orders or send export files back and forth. Below, you’ll find an honest overview of the available options and when to choose each one.
Which data do you actually need to synchronize?
Before you choose a method, it’s helpful to know exactly what needs to be exchanged between Salesforce and your fulfilment partner:
| Data | From | To | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orders | Salesforce | Fulfilment Partner / 3PL | Have orders automatically picked, packed, and shipped |
| Shipping Status & Track & Trace | Fulfilment Partner / 3PL | Salesforce | Notify the customer and update the order status |
| Inventory | Fulfilment Partner / 3PL | Salesforce | Prevent overselling; up-to-date inventory in the webshop |
| Items (SKUs) | Salesforce | Fulfilment Partner / 3PL | Manage products once, match them correctly by SKU |
The Three Ways to Integrate Salesforce with Fulfilment
1. Customization through a Salesforce partner or AppExchange app
You can have a Salesforce partner build an integration, or you can use an AppExchange app designed specifically for your fulfilment partner. It closely follows the Salesforce data model and is ideal if you have complex, Salesforce-specific logic. Downside: it’s often a development project that requires ongoing maintenance, and an AppExchange app usually covers only one specific partner. Do you have complex, Salesforce-specific custom processes? If so, a Salesforce partner is often a better fit.
2. Middleware / iPaaS
A middleware or iPaaS solution translates messages between Salesforce and your fulfilment partner. It’s flexible and decoupled from Salesforce itself, with better logging and error handling. You’ll need to build the workflows yourself (or have them built), and management can become more complex as you add more partners, warehouses, or exceptions.
3. An integration platform
You connect Salesforce and your fulfilment partner once to an integration platform, which automatically orchestrates the data flows between the two (and, if applicable, your other systems). Less maintenance, a single overview, and the flexibility to add a second fulfilment partner, marketplaces, or an ERP later on without having to rebuild the system. This is the KoneX approach.
Comparison at a glance
| Method | Setup | Maintenance | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salesforce Partner / AppExchange | Development process or app per partner | Ongoing; often with one partner | Complex, Salesforce-specific logic |
| Middleware / iPaaS | Build Your Own Workflows | Increases with more partners/exceptions | Teams that want to manage their own work |
| Integration platform | Connect once | Centralized, scales with growth | Growth & Multiple Systems/Partners |

How does KoneX do it?
With the Salesforce – fulfilment integration from KoneX, orders are automatically transferred from Salesforce to your fulfilment partner or 3PL (such as Active Ants/Paxon or PostNL), and shipping status, tracking information, and inventory levels are automatically updated in Salesforce —without any duplicate data entry. Changes are processed automatically; where it’s more efficient (for example, with large volumes), KoneX also supports batch processing. You connect each system once and can easily add a second partner, marketplaces, or an ERP later on— Integrate Once. Connect Everywhere.
It’s important to be honest: if you have deep, Salesforce-specific custom processes, a specialized Salesforce partner may sometimes be a better fit. If your main goal is to reliably integrate Salesforce with your fulfilment system (and later with other systems) without having to maintain a separate custom development project, an integration platform is generally more reliable and less expensive to manage.
